Gone batty: Local roofer first in state to earn bat-friendly label

SANTA CRUZ — When Warren Knox and his crew at Knox Roofing open up a roof, it’s not unusual for them to find all manner of critters — raccoons, rats, bees and bats — to name a few.

“We’ll shoo them out of there, then button up the roof and let them go on their merry way,” he said.

Trouble is, for bats, this seemingly benign method of dealing with a conflict of interest — wildlife looking for shelter versus humans looking for a new or repaired roof that’s free of animal debris — can spell doom. (read entire article…)
